LeiaCam Update Ruined Resolution /Depth

At some point one of the LeiaCam updates spoiled the original high resolution and depth popout of the camera results. This needs to be fixed since it dramatically ruins the customer experience, as documented in this review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aERvsTFGCJ0&t=257s

Yes I have seen this

I have to watch the video first, but I will say I have not noticed this at all. My photos seem to look better actually (or, at worst, the same). Perhaps they tweaked something, I don’t know, but it doesn’t seem like a big deal.

I did some testing. Okay, yeah I see the resolution is significantly reduced. However, the overall experience is MUCH better. You get a live real-time 3D feed while taking photos, the photo app itself is a lot more responsive, and the parallax / convergence correction mostly works better. I recreated some old photos I had, and previously taking close portrait shots would result in high parallax and ghosting, and basically be unusable (without manual correction). Now the original shots look a lot better (easier to view with the eyes, less ghosting). Granted, in some cases it’s not 100% right and still needs some adjustment, but I would prefer that it attempted to fix it, so the raw output is usable out of the box. The performance, as I said, seems better (you can take shots faster) and the live 3D preview is a MASSIVE improvement. Overall, I can accept that the resolution is less (I imagine they did this for performance reasons) but it would be nice if they can add an advanced options for 5K capture and just let those users deal with it being slower.

its not the resolution thats the problem its the 3d effect, their is no pop and a very weak 3d effect. no one in their right mind will prefer the update, easily the dumbest tweak iv’e seen in 30 years. hey we have this awesome camera effect and with this new update we kill it…awesome. they need to put back the old camera settings so the effect is good again, ill be returning my tablet if they dont. great company great people but even genius can make errors

Have you tried editing the picture adjusting the focus ? It seems to fix the depth.

I checked some of the new photos I made, the 3D depth seems the same (or in a similar range). You might just have to manually adjust it.

thousands of people are likely thinking the same thing…why doesn’t it look very 3d. When I first got the tablet and did 0 updates I was blown away…now im wondering why the effect is so weak. people bought the tablet because it had exaggerated depth and a perfect 3d effect. why in jesus good name would you change this> baffled…

its likely 90 percent of owners wondering why.

this is urgent…quit dumbing it down…the trolls motivated you to change it and they likely didnt buy a LPD 2…now the owners are chiming in

  1. put depth map in leia cam back to its original form
  2. bring back the 3d slider in offline conversions
  3. thats it…its the perfect 3d tablet…

Yes, exactly! The depth is NOT THERE like it was originally which was outstanding … and neither is the resolution! It is extremely visible that something went south after the update. I hope someone from Leia responds back very soon about this. I want to factory reset my tablet just to get back to the original LeiaCam app with absolutely amazing photo depth and resolution but then l miss out on updates to the other apps!!! I am so sad about this.

My guess is that it was because if you took a photo (and didn’t post-edit the parallax) a lot of time it could have uncomfortable viewing and/or visible ghosting. While the way it is now has less 3D effect, it’s more comfortable and with less glitches.

Are you serious? I think a solution is a legacy toggle…gives the person a choice between exaggerated 3d effect with a little cross talk the odd time, or 3d with weak effect but cleaner image, I personally like the clean look sometimes but I bought a 3d tablet, and want 3d. The effect of 3d is very weak with the cam app and leia players 2d to 3d conversion. Why not offer or improve 3d choices. I’ve been using owl3d to convert videos to 3d and the effect is avatar like. Owl3d is an AI converter and when I bought this tablet I expected the same effect. Sbs on micro SD is fantastic but with the new light field singular option the 3d effect is super weak. These fixeswill determine if I get a lume pad 3 or wait

Yeah, they should add some toggle or options. That’s a good idea.

Yes i also miss the pop 3d effect that we got in the past, I got your point with the 3d effect being more pleasing for the eyes on the LumePad , but if you want to use that picture in other devices like VR headsets which had no ghosting or crosstalk at all you lose a lot of depht, you’re sacrificing one of the best features of the tablet,

If we can get a depht control independently like in the leia viewer, that will be awesome.

Thanks for the video, and I hate to have to reset to factory. I have a few questions:

  1. What is the original version (SW configuration version) that is the good factory reset?

  2. I think someone said that the new version that caused the problem came out in Dec? If so, what is the version where the differences are seen by all?

  3. Is there anyway to do an update on an older version that you say is the good version? Can LEIA comment and verify the issues, and simply replace the new version with the older version so that we can “update” to the prior version before the major changes? Seems like a reasonable thing to do while we wait for verifications and app corrections. This would also allow us to retain the corrections in the other apps.

Leia is a small company and money talks…would be willing to donate 100 cad to the cause…maybe if others jump in we can get a few changes, after all they are not working for free, seems reasonable. they don’t owe us this because we bought the tablet. they told us glasses free 3d and AI and we got that, but some minor changes could be in order and greatly improve the expereince not that it isnt already 10 years ahead of its time.

  1. slider for conversions and or the option to use AI to convert 2d to 3d from local files also with a slider or a few sliders adjusting 3d effect similar to the old lg cinema 3d tvs.
  2. old camera resolution and depth effects but with preview if its possible that is.
  3. real racing 3 app, i would pay 30 for that game and many others would also, it may even boost user base resulting in my sales if the real racing 3 fans found out they could play in 3d could generate money for the company i would actively promote it on notebooktalk forums and maybe create a you tube channel.
  4. its possible for the lume pad 3 to convert all content to 3d, maybe a final software update for the same feature.
  5. people like to fiddle with settings sometimes(half population) some people like to just have it work, but having a enthusiast level of control would boost your REP and like its not rocket science but having a euclectic group of customers is key…not just catering to a few people.

My version is 2.2.5211. Is this the version that you are talking about that has the resolution problem? What is the factory reset version?

Note, factory reset is not really a good option. Josh explains it in the video. You have to disconnect from wifi, so you can’t update any apps or download anything new (since that uses newer versions of the OS/services). So it’s kind of only for testing and not a solution.

Yes, thanks for the response and clarification. I took it that to return to the original ‘good’ images you needed to factory reset the tablet. Then you loose the essential updates to all the other apps. Then disconnect the WIFI so that you retain the ‘good’ LeiaCam – then keep that tablet pristine. And use another tablet for the other apps. No this is not the best solution.

As I noted in the other post, maybe Leia should provide an update that reverts back to the original, OR allow us to select which apps to update, etc. etc. as a quick fix.

However, my question still remains, what is the LeiaCam version that is the ‘good’ one? And what version did the change happen? The version I have is the 2.2.5211, and I presume that this is the updated one with the problem?

And the final note is that some have multiple tablets, one to use the good LeiaCam version that never updates.

Question: IF one purchases a new tablet to work this way, will the NEW tablet have the OLD LeiaCam version upon Factory Reset that does NOT have the problem, OR will the newer tablets all contain the updated LeiaCam App that exhibits the problems? If the new tablets have the new version with the issue even with Factory Reset, then this kills the reason to have multiple tablets.
