Types of Depth maps

For some of my work, I’ve wanted to use a mix of depth anything and Blender, as well as handmade depth maps.
I’m interested in getting the quality of my work to a better standard.
So, here’s a few things I need to know.

I’ve been on Wikipedia, and I’ve learned about a concept, a concept where a depth map has multiple layers, so I wanted to try out using Masking to enhance the quality of my work. (Lumepad seems to only read monochrome depth maps)
Depth anything V2 has released, and I’m interested in dropping monochrome depth maps from my work if I understand what I’m looking at.
So, the maps output by Depth Anything V2, are odd, as the closer the object is, it’s red, and the farther the object is, it’s a bright shade of yellow.

The original depth maps from Depth Anything V1, could be conveniently converted to a monochrome image, and in some cases, I’d say it helped.
That being said, the reason I picked Depth Anything is because in my opinion, it’s the best Temporal quality I can get atm, nothing comes close in my opinion.

What I’m curious about is what I’m looking at in V2, why are the closer objects shaded a dark red?

This looks amazing. Thanks for the link. I was working on some 2D-to-3D conversion for games (you can search my name on LeiaPixs, I posted some examples) but using an older algorithm. This looks like 100x better, thanks. In my case I just remapped the color channels to get a gray scale image (if you are doing this manually, like in Photoshop you can use the channel or curve editors to isolate colors, and then convert to a grayscale map). I’m not certain why they choose those colors, I’d have to check the source paper.
