Yeah, I’m working on it now, and do plan to support Acer. The issue is that the market that owns the Pro model is surely smaller than the Consumer market (or if both were combined) so it just means developers make less money, and also the product is worse for everyone (less software), while Acer doesn’t seem to make any additional revenue off this. Doesn’t make sense.
They are stupid . So it’s not just the different “SpatialLabs Experience Center” Versions (the non pro includes True Game, the pro includes additional tools like Model Viewer Pro, Unreal Engine,…)? Since both share the same Spatiallabs Player for example. Or Spatiallabs Go. Is it a different driver set which would prevent non pro users from running a solution which you have programmed in a pro environment?
I haven’t got it working yet. But I tested some other software and messaged Acer and they basically said that I needed to use the Pro model (which I have). The entire issue is that once I get the app working, customers also need the Pro model. Since the consumer version is locked to only open those 4 Acer apps, no other apps will work. Dumbest thing ever. It’s like if you release an iPhone and you can only open apps made by Apple.
Hmm… the consumer version is locked to only open those 4 Acer apps. But on the other side the pro model which doesn’t come with the True Game app is not locked (since True Game indeed can be installed on pro machines). So, the lock is only on one of the two lines, which really makes no sense. Ok the pro line is more expensive, and some non-pro Laptops are dedicated for gaming with powerful graphics (True Game). But imho it would be better for everyone (including them) if they made pro features as paid versions and just publish recommendations which of their hardware should be used.
To make even less sense. The SpatialLabs laptop I got (for gaming) is of the consumer line and is actually $2,000 more expensive than the “Pro” model. Not sure what they are smoking…
So I got more time to play with the Acer 3D monitor. The 3D is absolutely amazing and super low ghosting, even compared to the 16" display. Games are working well, and I got FreeSync operational which makes a HUGE difference in smoothness, since 4K 3D is already intensive and I had to lower settings on the 16" model due to stutter. Here it looks a lot smoother.
Only major issue is that I can’t get the video player to work, so I’ve been unable to watch any 3D films. I contacted Acer and they said they would call me back on the phone, though I haven’t heard anything back yet. This is a major bummer, but hopefully they can release an update.
The 2D-to-3D is a mixed bag. It does work on basically any 2D source (non DRM) such as YouTube. It is also smooth and doesn’t stutter. However, the 3D itself has major artifacts that make it uncomfortable to watch. It’s clearly worse than what I’ve seen with Lume Pad or the new Red Magic. I mean I guess it sort of works, and at least it’s adjustable, but something feels really odd about it.
The model viewer works okay, I guess. Some models looked great, but others opened with the textures missing, or at the wrong scale, or just with strange glitches. So sort of a hit or miss here, but when it works it looks really good.
So, overall, I would say it was worth the money (I paid around $1,800) cause the 3D is the best I’ve ever seen. However, this is assuming Acer fixes the software, cause right now it’s kinda rough. The video player does not even install, and several other apps are partially broken. Only really the games on TrueGame are 100% what you would expect from a $2K product.
Thank you for your excellent review and for keeping us informed.
Q1: About the video player - you said you couldn’t even install it. Do you have an Acer 15" SpatialLabs 3D laptop? If so, can you connect the 27" monitor to this laptop and use it in 3D mode like the laptop’s built-in screen?
Q2: Would you recommend this monitor for dual use (2D for office work and 3D with games/movies)? Does its 2D mode use the full 4K resolution, as their SpatialLabs 3D laptops do?
Q3: Unfortunately the entire SpatialLabs suite is Windows only. Would it run on a Mac running Windows in Parallels mode?
So I realized you can play videos/movies with the Go app. I was trying the media player, which I’ve used on the laptop. However SpatialLabs Go does support the standard SBS half-res format, so I was able to watch some trailers and it looks amazing. I had the 16" Acer display on the PC, but it looks like Acer didn’t anticipate anyone would buy 2 of the monitors, since only 1 works in 3D at a time (and which one is enabled seems almost random, does not honor Windows primary monitor). Yeah, the monitor looks totally normal in 2D mode, full 4K, and actually is a much better panel than the 16" one in terms of color. It’s not HDR or OLED, so it’s not amazing in general, compared to $2,000 2D monitors, but good compared to any other 3D monitor I’ve seen. I was unable to get the 16" View display working on Linux (with Windows 11 VM). In theory it should work, but something was messed up. I might want to try again, since I had to unplug the 16" View cause it was interfering with the software.
Interesting! In my experience on the SpatialLabs 16’’ laptop, using SpatialLabs Go with a 3rd party player such as VLC for SBS movie content means a noticeably poorer quality (more crosstalk in dark scenes with bright lights) than using SpatialLabs’ own player application.
I’m not sure about ghosting. I would prefer to use the actual video player (even though it is limited, it at least has some options). I don’t know why there would be any issue with ghosting, it looked fine to me, but I just checked 3 trailers. I will likely watch a full film later to actually judge the quality. But it looked great, so I doubt anything was broken.
So there’s basically no ghosting. I watched a movie with them being in abandoned houses with flashlights, like worst case scenario, and I didn’t see ghosting at all. Granted, when playing games, with high 3D depth you can see feint ghosting. But with films, which are usually conservative, I don’t see it at all.
Thanks for sharing your experiences, now I am even more eager to buy it!
Does anyone know a place or way to buy it cheaper?
That’s good news (but only for owners of the 27’’ Monitor). If it’s possible to have the perfect, ghostingfree 3D experience with SpatialLabs Go already, you may just use the feature-rich movieplayer of your choice. I don’t see the need of another dedicated 3D movie player then. That’s great. With the 16’’ laptops and screens (prob. based on older tech) it’s a different story: At least my unit makes a noticeable difference in ghosting between SpatialLabs Go and StatialLabs Player. I would say the worst is SpatialLabs Go, followed by SpatialLabs Player V2, then SR Player 0.19 by Dimenco/Leia, then SpatialLabs Player V3 (the current version, whereas this one has many drawbacks and shortcomings on the other side).
It’s still on sale on Amazon ($150 off) this is the best I’ve seen: Amazon.com: Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27 PSV27-2 27" Ultra HD Stereoscopic 3D Gaming Display | Eye Tracking | Real-Time Rendering | AI Technologies I AMD FreeSync Premium (G-SYNC Compatible) | 160Hz : Electronics
Yeah, I think the display has been updated a bit, it’s not the same panel (obviously not the same size, etc.). Hard to say if they improved the 3D itself, or it’s just cause it’s a much huger screen that it looks better. The colors are definitely different (I think the 16" has more vivid colors, actually) but the 3D looks more solid on the 27". SpatialLabs Go works great for SBS half-width content. The issue is sometimes videos are in over-under format, and also the UI interface doesn’t work (e.g. if you use VLC) meaning you can’t read subtitles or even press pause. You can use Peter Wimmer’s Stereoscopic Player, and just output for SBS, this is probably as good as it gets, though I was hoping for something more modern.
It would be a good deal if it weren’t to they ask an additional $1700 for shipping and import fees
I got this 32" monitor imported from China recently. I think I did need to pay around $250 for duties, but the shipping was affordable. It’s 3D only (does not work in 2D) and only supports SBS, there’s no need for software at all (could be good or bad depending on how you look at it). Though if you have software that can output SBS it works great (you can even just play a SBS half-width MP4 directly with VLC and it works).
The 3D effect itself is great, though I think the Acer has better resolution (they are both 4K but this one splits the resolution in half). Though it’s 32" so you can get better depth and pop-out.
Nevertheless: Has the Acer technician called you back yet? When you speak to him, please convey our frustration at their lack of interest in completing their only (and in many cases mandatory) 3D movie player, which has been overdue for years. Since they switched away from the Dimenco/Leia SR player, it has got worse with every release (except for adding a new camera support and a gimmick for http streaming). Now it can’t even play movie files from a local network (SMB). You have to copy the files over locally before opening them. Still no full over under format, no multiple audio tracks, no subtitle support.
Sadly, no. They never called me. I got an email with a number to call. I called (during business hours) and left a message. Never got a response. Called again yesterday and it rang for like 2 minutes, then went to voicemail. Kinda sad.
In any case, I realized that SpatialLabs Go will work with any fullscreen SBS source. So I’m just gonna develop my own app, cause I don’t have a lot of faith judging from forum threads from like 2 years ago with no solution.
Okay, so I finally got a call back and it was someone who knew what they were saying (clearly highest level of support). He did not know an answer to the problem, but he said he’s gonna get this monitor model in and test the bug I was talking about and get back to me on Friday. So it looks like we should be good.
