Is the TOF sensor being used?

I had thought the Lume Pad’s TOF sensor was used with the front camera to produce a depth map. However, when I take a selfie, I see a banner saying that the photo will be saved in 2D, and the resulting JPG does not contain a depth map. But if I later view the photo in LeiaPlayer, a new file is created containing both the image and the depth map. So I assume the depth map is being computed by AI magic, rather than the TOF sensor. Is that right?

That is right. The only use of the ToF sensor on Lume Pad is when real-time app developers use our experimental head-tracking SDK.
