RedMagic Pad 3D(nubia Pad 3D II / Lume Pad 3)Review/Thoughts

I’ve been a 3D stereoscopic enthusiast for over a decade, having purchased over a dozen 3D devices. I’m here to share my in-depth experience with this tablet. In summary, I would say it’s “currently the best Glasses Free 3D portable device in terms of overall effect, but it also provides the worst 3D system software service.” I’ve also made a review video and uploaded it to YouTube.

The best 3D Tablet of 2024 - RedMagic 3D Tablet Review(Lume Pad 3 / nubia Pad 3D II)

I’ll be posting the video script here for those who prefer reading over watching.(The following text has been translated using Google’s AI and may be more accurate and fluent than the translation in the video.)

Today, I’m reviewing the Red Magic Pad 3D Exploration Edition. If you know how to use this tablet or have watched my video and unlocked its correct usage, then it deserves a score of 8 out of 10. However, if you’re an ordinary user who doesn’t know how to use it, you might only give it a score of 3 or even lower.

Let’s start with the advantages .

In fact, this tablet has a more familiar name among us 3D enthusiasts: Nubia Pad 3D Ⅱ(Lume pad 3,maybe). This tablet is claimed to have a 100% increase in 3D brightness, an 80% increase in 3D resolution, and all-round upgrades in other aspects compared to the previous generation.

In actual use, the 3D resolution has indeed improved significantly compared to the previous generation’s poor 566p resolution (I’ve seen some people say that the previous generation - Lume Pad 2 (Nubia Pad 3D) had an 800p 3D resolution, but based on the official data released at the beginning and visual observation, it should be 566p). The resolution of each eye is now around 800p, which is already quite good among currently mass-produced Glasses Free 3D devices (the official claim of an 80% increase in resolution probably refers to an 80% increase in total pixel resolution). I hope there will be a next-generation product in the future, with an upgraded 3D resolution of “1080p per eye”.

The 3D brightness has also improved significantly compared to previous devices. The official maximum brightness is 553 nits, and when switching between 2D and 3D at maximum brightness, there is no noticeable decrease in brightness as with previous devices.

In terms of 3D image crosstalk, this device has achieved the top level among current Glasses Free 3D devices. Although crosstalk may still occur in scenes with high contrast, it is rare to see crosstalk when watching most daytime videos and images with adjusted contrast like 3D movies. I hope there will be a next-generation product in the future that can achieve the anti-crosstalk level of active 3D.

(Let me explain what crosstalk is. It’s when, for example, your left eye sees an image that is supposed to be seen by your right eye.)

Speaking of crosstalk, we have to mention the device’s vertical 3D display effect. In previous Glasses Free 3D tablets or phones, most devices only supported horizontal 3D, and only a few supported vertical 3D. Moreover, the crosstalk problem in vertical mode was much more severe than in horizontal mode. However, this device not only supports vertical 3D but also has crosstalk levels similar to horizontal mode, which is very rare.

Regarding 3D model viewing, I believe that anyone who has seen this effect in person will be amazed and start to imagine the future of this technology. But I think this future may not exist, at least not until the 3D system software service of this device is improved.

No, wait, it’s time to introduce the advantages. Let’s continue talking about the advantages.

In terms of 3D video playback, tests have shown that it can smoothly play 8K 60fps 3D videos, and it can also smoothly watch 180-degree and 360-degree 3D VR videos. The image quality when watching Blu-ray 3D movies is almost perfect except that the resolution has not yet reached “1080p per eye”. In terms of brightness, contrast, color, and anti-crosstalk, it’s simply perfect.

In terms of 3D shooting, thanks to the 45mm large spacing between the left and right rear cameras, the 3D stereoscopic effect is much better than that of all previous 3D phones and tablets. For those who want to use one device to meet all their 3D needs, the shooting effect of this device is basically usable. For those who want to shoot 3D images more seriously, they can also use ego for more convenient shooting, viewing, and sharing.

Let’s talk about some advantages beyond the 3D stereoscopic related features .

First, the device’s performance is excellent. With an 8Gen2 SoC and 16GB of RAM running on a 12.1-inch screen, it can handle large-scale games like Genshin Impact and Z·Z·Z at the highest graphics settings with a basically stable 60 frames per second.

Then, the quality of the display’s underlying screen is also very good, and you can manually calibrate the screen in the settings. This feature is incredibly good and a positive development. I hope it can be widely promoted. It would be great if all tablets and phones had this feature.

In terms of 5G communication, this device not only supports 5G internet when you insert a 5G SIM card but can also send and receive text messages. This is a very useful feature in today’s era where almost every app requires SMS verification codes.

Additionally, the device has a large battery and long battery life, and the Type-C port is full-featured, so you can basically plug in anything. Well, that’s about it.

Let’s discuss some unique features of this device that are neither strengths nor weaknesses.

One is its 2D-to-3D conversion feature. While it has some utility, it’s quite limited. Except for planes that extend continuously from the screen’s edge, such as the ground, walls, or sea, which can exhibit some continuous depth variation, other objects are essentially treated like cutouts, divided into foreground, middle ground, and background layers. It’s more suitable for third-person games and viewing individual characters, but it’s only mildly interesting and can’t compare to native 3D at all.

Another feature is its 3D extended screen functionality. It can cast the screen of other devices onto the tablet and convert it to 3D. The conversion quality has been mentioned earlier, and the casting quality, frame rate, and latency are all quite average, nowhere near the level of professional streaming software like Moonlight. Again, it’s a feature with some utility but is quite limited.

Let’s talk about the shortcomings of this device.

Specifically, the 3D system software service is absolutely terrible. Let me list the issues one by one.

First, unless I knew that this device was a collaboration between ZTE and Leia, how would a regular user know that they need to add a specific suffix to their 3D photo filenames, as demonstrated in the video, for the tablet to recognize them as 3D photos? How would they know that they need to add this suffix to their 3D VR photos and videos for the tablet to recognize them?

Second, the 3D video player has no other options besides loop playback. There’s no subtitle selection, no audio track selection, no playback speed adjustment, no zoom, no stereoscopic depth adjustment – nothing. You have to pre-process everything on your computer.

Third, 3D photos taken by the camera can only be viewed in 3D on this series of tablets. They can’t be used on other 3D viewing devices. Since 3D videos can be exported in the universal side-by-side (SBS) format, why can’t photos? Leia clearly provided a function to convert 3D photos taken by the tablet into the universal SBS format, which can be selected when sharing photos. Why don’t you provide this option? Currently, we have to extract the left and right eye images in photopea or other professional software and then stitch them together into the universal SBS format. How is a regular user supposed to know how to do this?

Fourth, if a regular user gets this tablet and doesn’t have their own 3D videos, images, or models, they can only look at the poorly made 3D images that seem to be AI-generated. What about your 3D content software, Migu Video 3D? It was installed on the Far Horizon 3D phone that was released at the same time. Why isn’t it installed on this tablet? This software is not very useful for us old 3D enthusiasts, but it’s very useful for other 3D users.

Fifth, let’s talk about the 3D images that come pre-installed in your 3D frame. If a regular user who has never used glasses-free 3D buys this tablet or sees it in a store, they will probably open the large 3D frame app on the desktop first. Don’t you know that for many people who haven’t seen glasses-free 3D, this kind of large-area out-of-screen image can cause eye strain and dizziness? After experiencing this, they may never be interested in glasses-free 3D devices again, let alone buy one. And they may even tell others about this bad experience, which could discourage many new users and potential customers. Do you realize that?

sixth, are you aware that your default intelligent refresh rate switching, along with 144hz and 120hz refresh rates, can cause videos with more than 15 frames, especially 60fps videos, to not play at full frame rate, resulting in intermittent frame drops? If I hadn’t tried switching to 60hz and 90hz and found that there was no problem with these refresh rates, this issue would have been a thorn in my side, incredibly frustrating. High refresh rates are good, but please at least make sure the system software is well-adapted.

seventh, why can’t your 3D mode add a button to the 3D conversion function in other programs and on the 3D extended screen, where the source image is a full-width SBS left and right? This would directly split the screen in half, with the left side corresponding to the left eye image and the right side corresponding to the right eye image. In this way, 3D videos from major video platforms, as well as various stereo software and games that support SBS display, could all be viewed and used on this tablet. If this feature were added, the large number of popular Glasses Free 3D videos on major video platforms could be viewed vertically in Glasses Free 3D on this large-screen tablet, without being limited to the small screen of a phone. What a great selling point that would be.

(I have a friend who modified the Lume Pad 2’s Moonlight 3D to make it work on the Red Magic 3D tablet, but he doesn’t plan to release this modified program. If anyone wants to adapt the Lume Pad 2’s software to the Red Magic 3D tablet, they can try modifying it themselves, and it should be successful.)

There are also some minor issues that I won’t mention here. I will provide feedback to the official team and hope they can actively improve and upgrade the system. I hope that such good Glasses Free 3D hardware won’t be ruined by poor system software service.

I also hope that Leia can release a Leia version of this tablet, improve the system software service, provide system software for Red Magic 3D tablet users to download, and open up the SDK. Don’t waste such good Glasses Free 3D hardware.

Wow. Now THAT’S what I call a review  Thanks! Actually I bought this tablet yesterday, but the info provided here is really great and useful. Thank you.
About the modified Moonlight - may be you friend can share his build privately, to those who ask? Or at least hint at how to modify the code? Lack of streaming SBS support is terrible, it kills the very Idea of 3D tablet. Please, ask him to reconsider may be?

hard pass for me…going to just keep lume pad 2, enjoy the versatility of being able to download 3d movies to my computers 12 tb of storage and watching them on my pad wirelessly. micro sd of 1 tb is nice for storing non netflix movies then converting them to impressive 3d. also enjoy the 33 hours of gaming battery life and native 3d games along with the amazing 16mp dual cameras

If this tablet’s 3D player can at least receive shared files (I do hope it can!) then you can use app “CIFS Documents Provider” to wirelessly access your local network’s shared drives and stream videos. No root required.

Very cool. I bought one when it came out, it was from a Chinese website, may take a while for shipping. Excited to see the quality improvements they are claiming, though I was worried about the software side (or if the OS was even in English). Seemed worth trying.

im tempted to get the 512gb one, but ill wait till sept 27th and see what the global version offers software wise. its still awesome it has a great display and nearly double the performance, its just i was hoping for leia apps and then some. hard to justify 1000 on a tablet that doesn’t convert youtube to 3d and too boot the reviewer(thanks) said the 3d effect is just ok, like a cardboard cut out. mind you people said that about the lumepad 2 and i find the conversion especially photos to be surreal

Remembering all other Chinese global versions, it will be at least 50% more expensive and will have less software actually. Xiaomi phones, for example, in global firmware lack a lot of functions that Chinese version has - from call recording & vibration patterns to piano sounds in dialer etc. Google requires now that all the essential apps like file manager, dialer, messages etc. must be from Google only in order to be able to install Play Store. And Google native apps are, to put it lightly, primitive.

System can be switched to English

Can you please check if screen protectors (film or tempered glass) affect 3D quality? And is there any info about root? RED Hydrogen was unlocked from factory & rooting it was easy, what about this devise?
Also, there’s conflicting info about eye tracking - is it better now? Do glasses mess with it? Still no 3D in the dark?
Thanks.

im going to wait, not like the chinese version will disappear or jump up in price. im guessing the 512gb version will cost 1200-1300usd

Excellent review, dude! Thanks for this, it was really illuminating. Could you please tell me how the resolution is in portrait mode? Some 3D devices have decreased resolution in portrait mode, so I was worried it might be the same for this one.

Hi thanks for the great review
Will it show MPO pictures from the Fujifilm W3. Does it have the Leia Appstore and Leiaplayer, LeiaTube and LeiaPix. I have the Nubia tab 3D and was hopping to get a 4K screen version next with the Leia apps

I had a matte screen protector on the Lume Pad 2. It did help reduce reflection (which made things better in some cases, the reflection can be distracting). But I just took it off, cause matte film sort of has a film grain look and it makes the image less sharp.

This tablet uses totally different screen, based on Dimenco tech, not Leia. That’s why I’m asking about screen protector’s messing with 3D. May be it uses nanoprisms or some other different technology and putting protector on will cause problems with sharpness or something similar… It’ difficult when there is almost no technical info, only ads :\

Not sure, but it’s probably not worth it.

1、I tried the tempered glass screen protectors and it doesn’t affect 3D quality
2、I’m not going to root.
3、No loss of tracking with glasses in well-lit areas. Still no 3D in the dark.

It’s the same. Horizontal resolution is roughly 1280800, vertical resolution is 8001280

1、There is a Leiaplayer 4.0 that can only recognize stereoscopic videos by their filenames. No other software

2、No,It can’t. You can use StereoPhoto Maker to convert mpo files to SBS.
